Caelum

Caelum

Caelum is a First-Person Survival-Adventure game, it can be played with co-op online or singleplayer where the player has to survive and explore a world filled with fragmented floating islands. The world of Caelum is divided between the past and present with multiple ruins scattered across the floating island, these ruins are from the time before the isles began to fly.

The game goes in depth in the story of Gabi, the main character, as well as his family Grampa Murdoc and his twin also named Gabi. When in game the player plays as the brother and if in co-op the player visiting will play as the sister. The story starts as Grampa Murdoc is kidnapped by an unknown giant bird, Gabi is tasked to find and rescue Murdoc. He will need to explore and develop different weapons and gizmos to reach the island at the top of caelum.

Topographic Map

The world of caelum is divided into 4 big islands, the players can explore them as soon as possible if they have the necessary items. Each island is blocked by a different requirement, like cold proof clothing, a parachute or a grappling hook. This way the player has the freedom of choice and can explore as it sees fit, and the game design principles can be maintained knowing the player requires certain items to progress, the items themselves can be crafted or found through exploring the game.

The level design is trying to replicate the open-world feel while still maintaining a hub-world structure with the player returning back to its house on the first island. One of the most important aspects of the level design is the use of different heights and landmarks, the latter being crucial for navigation, since giant trees, tree-top bridges and plains the player almost every time has one landmark in sight during the whole game, that way being possible to find its way home without the use of a map.

Aesthetics

The game visuals are colorful and stylized not trying to replicate real life but instead a romanticized version of it, and with the use of cell shading and custom texture work the look we strive for is similar to the one used in Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild.
